About the program

Biotechnology is a rapidly developing field that combines several adjacent specialties as biological, chemical and engineering in the field of pharmaceuticals, food, cosmetology, environmental and other industries.
Biotechnology allows people to synthesize various useful substances with desired properties. To do this, first, the cells or tissues of microorganisms, plants or animals are cultured; and then the target products are isolated and purified.
In the process of mastering the program, students study the main principles of obtaining the following biotechnological products:
medical and veterinary supplies (enzymes, vaccines, antibodies, antibiotics, steroids, vitamins, medical materials, diagnostic tests, etc.);
food products and starter cultures for their production (bread, wine, kvass, beer, fermented milk products, cheeses and sour cream, some sausages); ethanol; food protein; food additives (acids, flavor enhancers, dyes, preservatives, flavors, sweeteners) and etc.;
biological plant protection products and fertilizers, animal feed, new recombinant plant and animal species;
cleaning and disposal of solid, liquid and gaseous waste;
production of biofuels.

Learning outcomes

  • Obtaining, enhancing, culturing, maintaining cell and/or tissue cultures of microorganisms, animals and plants, as well as affecting biochemical processes in them;
  • Production of biotechnological products using microbial synthesis and biotransformation, biocatalysis, genetic and cellular engineering;
  • Control of condition, quality and safety of biotechnological raw materials, biotechnological objects and products, as well as biotechnological process options;
  • Skills in managing the process of biotechnological production in accordance with the requirements of national and international regulations;
  • Design of biotechnology industry enterprises;
  • Development of new technologies and process schemes for biotechnology factories;
  • Knowledge of improving the efficiency of the biotechnology industry through the implementation of modern low-waste and non-waste technologies.

Career opportunities

A graduate is a general specialist who is able:
to work as a biochemist, microbiologist, engineer, technologist in industries where the product is obtained with the help of biological objects: in the pharmaceutical, food, agricultural, environmental, cosmetological, processing and extractive industries;
to create new types of microorganisms–super-producers; or to create new varieties of agricultural crops of plants and animals resistant to the infections and harmful environmental influences;
to design treatment facilities and biological reactors at pharmaceutical, chemical, food and agricultural-industrial enterprises;
to labor in the certification centers, in the control and analytical and agricultural laboratories for quality and safety control of industrial output; in the research institutes; at any biotechnological companies.
