The Great Ethnographic Dictation in Irkutsk was Held With the Support of INRTU

INRTU hosted the Great Ethnographic Dictation international action in the Irkutsk Region. On November 7, over 200 students of Irkutsk-based higher educational institutions joined the event.

The action was organized by the Federal Agency for Nationalities, the government of the Irkutsk Region and the city administration. This project has been organized as a community outreach for ethnographic literacy promotion since 2016.

Addressing the participants, Ruslan Bolotov, the Mayor of Irkutsk, noted that the event helps promote awareness about the history of the country and native land, culture and traditions of Russia's peoples.

"Such large-scale projects draw people's attention to the rich history, and demonstrate our solidarity. We live in a unique country with people of different nationalities and religions being closely connected. In this sense, Irkutsk stands as a powerful example of a city with no interethnic conflicts", says the Mayor.

Elena Terpugova, Deputy Chief of Staff to the Governor and Government of the Irkutsk Region, noted that overall, 75 sites are scheduled to host the dictation in the area:

"More than 130 Region's nationalities peacefully coexist and cherish their traditions".

INRTU Rector Mikhail Kornyakov wished the participants to successfully complete the dictation tasks.

“As one of the most multinational universities in Siberia, INRTU is home to students from 56 countries. Since 2012, the University has been hosting the festival "Siberia - Territory of Peace and Harmony" as a venue for each ethnic group to demonstrate its cultural identity”, the Rector emphasized.

The ethnographic dictation included 30 questions, 20 of which were national, 10 - focused on the peoples of the Irkutsk Region. A warm-up came before the main task. According to the description, the students had to guess personalities of Count Mikhail Speransky, art collector Vladimir Sukachev and cosmonaut Anatoly Ivanishin. In addition, the participants managed to figure out the title rewarded to Irkutsk in 2021 (The City of Labor Valor). At the end of the event, prizes were drawn using a lottery drum.

Egor Tuzov, a second-year student of the School of Power Engineering and the INRTU team halfback, joined the project.

"I was really curious to learn about Russia's ethnic groups. I performed well in the history of the Irkutsk Region. Yet, I struggled with different peoples’ culture-related questions.

Such events are sure to broaden horizons of people of all ages. As a multinational country, we need to show respect and tolerance to each nation's culture", - emphasized Egor.
