INRTU Artists Create Large-Scale Mosaic Panel “Birth of Light”
INRTU staff and graduates are working on one of the largest mosaic panels in Irkutsk. The artwork, called “Birth of Light”, will decorate the façade of a new 17-story building.
The panel was designed by Dmitrii Dorokhin, Head of the Department of Monumental and Decorative Painting and Design named after V. G. Smagin and a professor at INRTU:
“I am currently working on a new large-scale mosaic. The finished work will cover approximately 240 square meters.
A team of young and experienced artists is working on the project, including graduates of INRTU’s Department of Monumental and Decorative Painting and Design”.
Dmitrii Dorokhin said that the project has already taken about a year of planning, developing the design and testing the production process:
“This is one of the most important projects I have worked on. I hope it will become a notable part of the city’s modern landscape”.
The panel will be 40 meters high and 6 meters wide. It will decorate the façade of a new 17-sory building near Yakobi Bay. The artwork will contain more than 250000 mosaic pieces. Its design combines images of Lake Baikal, the Angara River and the rising sun. The artists use both warm and cool colors to create smooth changes in light and color. Thousands of small mosaic pieces will come together to form the Academic Bridge. The panel is planned to be installed this autumn.
