Capturing Irkutsk: My Journey in the New Photography Practice Course

I am a senior journalism student at Irkutsk National Research Technical University, and this semester, our department introduced a brand-new and exciting addition to the curriculum: a dedicated Photography Practice course. Although I have always loved photography and own my own camera, I quickly realized that self-taught skills cannot compare to systematic, professional training. That is why I was so eager to join this class.

In today’s media landscape, journalists can no longer rely solely on words. Readers want to see the story, not just read about it. This new course was designed precisely to bridge that gap. Unlike previous classes where we only scratched the surface of photographic theory, this course is entirely hands-on. Looking back, I realize that the one thing I lacked before was exactly this kind of real-world experience.

This course has taught me far more than just technical settings like aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. While mastering the balance of these elements is crucial, the lessons went much deeper. I vividly remember my first week, struggling to capture a clear image of our snowy campus in the dim winter light. However, through weekly assignments and patient guidance, I learned how to manipulate natural light to create atmosphere and depth. I came to understand that great photography isn’t about having the most expensive equipment; it’s about having a keen eye for detail and knowing exactly when to press the shutter.

What I loved most about this course was how it transformed my perspective on Irkutsk. Initially, I found the city’s winters cold and desolate. But through frequent outdoor shooting sessions, I gradually began to appreciate the unique beauty of this "white city." Seeing these moments frozen in time gave me a profound appreciation for my surroundings and a deeper understanding of the world around me.

The in-class feedback sessions were also invaluable. We projected our photos onto a large screen for group discussion, creating a safe space where we could make mistakes and learn from them. My classmates come from diverse backgrounds, and they offered unique perspectives on my work. Often, they saw stories in my images that I hadn’t even noticed myself. This collaborative environment sharpened my critical thinking and helped me understand how a single image can evoke different emotions in different people.

As graduation approaches, I feel significantly more confident in my skillset. I am no longer just a writer; I am a multimedia storyteller. The photos I have taken this semester will not only enrich my portfolio but will also accompany my final journalism project. This course has successfully bridged the gap between theory and practice, providing me with tools that will be essential for my future career. If you have the opportunity to take this Photography Practice course, do not hesitate. It will challenge you, inspire you, and ultimately help you see the world through a completely new lens. For me, this has been more than just a class; it has been a true journey of exploration.
