The Team of the Winter University of Urban Planning Design Successfully Presented the Project at the Master Planning Competition for the New Kharkhorum City of Mongolia
The team of the Baikal Winter University of Urban Planning Design of INRTU presented a project of the general plan of the city of New Kharkhorum. The work of the INRTU team was highly evaluated by the Mongolian President Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh, foreign jury, as well as the expert community, cultural and public figures of the country.
As reported earlier, by the Mongolian President’s decree, it was decided to reconstruct the ancient capital of the country and create the New Kharkhorum city in the Orkhon River valley. The Mongolian government has allocated 189 thousand hectares for massive construction. The Orkhon Valley is an important historical place where the ancient states of the Mongolian Empire originated. The city was founded in 1220 by Genghis Khan and was the Empire's capital for a long time.
A total of 428 teams from 54 countries took part in the competition. 36 teams, including five teams from Russia, made it to the final stage. Four teams represented Moscow and St. Petersburg. The only regional participants who made it to the final were Irkutians represented by the staff of the Baikal Winter University of Urban Planning Design.
The project defense and exhibition of works of the international competition took place in Ulan Bator from July 29 to August 1. The INRTU's project “Stretched Bow” was presented by the Winter University team, which included the scientific director Yuri Perelygin, member of the Scientific and Methodological Council Andrei Makarov and Director of the Baikal Winter University of Urban Planning Design Tatyana Trubnikova. In their work, the participants reflected the history of the place, the importance of the Orkhon Valley, and its connection with Ulaanbaatar. The New Kharkhorum city master plan included the necessary infrastructure inherent to a capital city, a landscape style of planning, green corridors throughout the city, and much more.
Mongolian President Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh studied the project of the Winter University team and thanked the members for their work.
“Speakers of the Great State Hural of Mongolia, cultural ambassador of the country Khurelbaatar Damdinsuren, members of the Union of Architects of Mongolia, teams from Turkey, Germany, Serbia, China, Mongolia, as well as numerous media representatives showed interest in our stand.
We managed to develop a world-level project thanks to the 25-year experience of the International Baikal Winter University of Urban Planning Design. The best practices in the field of architecture and urban planning are born at the sessions of the Winter University. This confirms that the Irkutsk Region, along with Moscow and St. Petersburg, claims to be a leader in the country in the field of urban planning,” noted Tatyana Trubnikova.
At the end of the competition, a jury consisting of representatives from Cornwall University, ArcDaily, Hainan University, Hanyang University and the Government of Mongolia selected five first places. Teams from China, Indonesia, Japan, Mongolia, France, Germany and Australia were recognized as winners.
