Russian-Chinese Geological Summer School Launched at INRTU
On August 12, the Russian-Chinese summer school “Geology of the Olkhon Region as a Reflection of the Interaction of Endogenous and Exogenous Processes” was officially opened at INRTU. The academic program takes the form of an expedition to the coast of Lake Baikal and the village of Arshan. Participants will attend lectures and engage in field practice.
The summer school will last fr om August 13 to 21. Over 20 students from the China University of Geosciences (Beijing) have set off on the expedition. During the expedition, they are studying the geological features of Lake Baikal. The main location of the school is INRTU’s “Chernorud” practice base in the Olkhon District.
The school began with an opening ceremony and an introductory lecture held in the workshops of the Department of Jewelry Design and Technology. Representatives from China and Russia participated in the event.
Vice-Rector for International Affairs Stepan Bykov noted that scientific cooperation between INRTU and the China University of Geosciences has been developing for over 20 years.

“Our universities are united by strong scientific ties. We hope this expedition will be informative, interesting, and beneficial for you,” Stepan Bykov addressed the guests.
Head of the Department of Jewelry Design and Technology at INRTU, Professor Raisa Lobatskaya, is accompanying the international guests on the trip. According to her, INRTU has repeatedly organized field trips to Lake Baikal for geologist colleagues from China. The uniqueness of this expedition lies in the study of more ancient geological processes.

“There are very few places like the Olkhon area in the world. The students will study the interaction of endogenous and exogenous processes, which are especially evident in the Olkhon District. All the geology here is visible on the earth's surface,” Raisa Lobatskaya explained.
After the school's opening ceremony, Raisa Lobatskaya gave the guests a tour of the jewelry workshops at INRTU.
It should be noted that during lectures and field trips, the students will learn about the geological features of the Baikal Rift Zone and become acquainted with the Cenozoic history of Olkhon area. The school's program includes a visit to the first outflow of Lake Baikal in the Buguldeyka area.
The group will then head to the southern part of Buryatia. The researchers will undertake a field trip in the Arshan resort area. The next day, the school participants will spend in the village of Listvyanka. After that, the Chinese students will return to INRTU, wh ere on August 23 they will present reports summarizing the work of the summer school.
