Journal “Earth Sciences and Subsoil Use” Indexed in Chemical Abstracts Service International Database
The journal “Earth Sciences and Subsoil Use”, the flagship publication of the strategic technological project “University as an International Center for Integrated Solutions in Mineral Resource Development and Environmental Protection” under the Priority 2030 program, has been indexed in the leading international database Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS). This status automatically places the journal among the highest categories of Russian scientific publications.
INRTU Vice-Rector for Geology, Earth and Environmental Sciences and Editor-in-Chief of the journal Alexander Parshin, emphasized that the inclusion of the publication in another international database reflects the dynamic development of geological research at INRTU. The editorial board expects that indexing in CAS will increase the journal’s visibility and appeal to authors worldwide, leading to growth in both the volume and quality of publications. This will further strengthen the academic reputation of Irkutsk National Research Technical University as a center of geological education and research.
“The inclusion of the ‘Earth Sciences and Subsoil Use’ journal in Chemical Abstracts was preceded by a lengthy review involving experts from respected international scientific and professional communities. The positive decision confirms that the editorial board adheres to research standards and academic ethics and brings together recognized scholars who accept for publication only high-quality papers addressing relevant issues in the Earth sciences.
Chemical Abstracts is the second major international database to include the journal. In 2024, it was indexed in GeoRef, which covers publications across all fields of geosciences, including geology. However, Chemical Abstracts Service, despite its name, also features sections devoted to geology, geochemistry, mineralogy, and environmental studies, and therefore indexes many leading geological journals,”
noted Alexander Parshin.
It should be recalled that in September 2025, “Earth Sciences and Subsoil Use” was assigned to the second level out of four in Russia’s new national ranking of academic journals, known as the “White List” of the Unified State Register of Academic Publications. According to the editorial board, this represents a major achievement, as three years ago the journal belonged to the lowest category of the Higher Attestation Commission list and was suitable only for the preliminary publication of postgraduate research results.
In 2026, Earth Sciences and Subsurface Use will become a bilingual journal, publishing all articles in both Russian and English, whereas currently the language of each article is chosen by the author. The editorial board is also working toward inclusion in Elsevier databases, including the multidisciplinary Scopus and the specialized GeoBase and Ei Compendex. Plans also include making full issues available on the ResearchGate platform.
Background:
The “Earth Sciences and Subsoil Use” journal is established on the basis of the Interuniversity collected papers “Geology, prospecting and exploration of ore mineral deposits” that has been published by IPU (later, ISTU, and then, INRTU) since 1973. The journal was renamed twice, in 2004 and 2017. Finally, in 2019, due to the involvement of a wide range of researchers dealing with extraction and processing of minerals, the journal took the title “Earth sciences and subsoil use”.
