INRTU Held First Competition of Student Sailing League
The race of the Irkutsk Region Student Sailing League took place on September 14 at the INRTU sports and health camp “Polytechnic” (17 km of the Baikal Tract).
The debut regatta involved 26 students and four faculty members from the INRTU Siberian School of Geosciences. Participants were divided into groups, forming six teams.
The league was initiated by the INRTU Siberian School of Geosciences (SSG) in cooperation with the Irkutsk Region Sailing Federation. As part of the university’s development program, the “Baikal Student Sailing League” consortium was established.
Chairman of the Irkutsk Region Sailing Federation Alexey Borovik emphasized the significance of this event:

“Lake Baikal and the Angara River are the Mecca of Siberian sailing. I am delighted that the Student Sailing League is launching at INRTU and I am confident many students will continue to train and excel in yacht racing”.
Scientific Supervisor of the Siberian School of Geosciences Alexander Parshin believes that Polytechnic graduates must be prepared to work under any conditions:

“We have major sections on marine geophysics and geology, so for educational research purposes, students must learn to operate a yacht independently”.
Teams were evaluated using a handicap coefficient applied to the yacht’s actual course completion. It is calculated based on characteristics (length, width, sail area, mast height) and allows comparing vessels of different classes in a single race, determining the winner by the lowest corrected time.
With a score of 9 points, the yacht “Veya” won first place. Second place went to “Yurmala”, also scoring 9 points. Third place was taken by “Sirius” with 12 points. The yacht “Happy” earned 13 points. Last place was taken by “Explorer” with 17 points. The yacht “Bravo”, crewed by faculty of the Siberian School of Geosciences, participated outside the competition.
Zhanna Isachenkova from the yacht “Sirius” noted that this race would be long remembered:
“Since my task was to advise on the direction of movement, I sat at the bow of the yacht. I felt unique emotions and a sense of excitement when our maneuvers allowed us to overtake opponents. I dream of pursuing sailing”.Aleksander Borodachev was responsible for the jib on the vessel “Happy”:
“I had to deploy the second sail, which increases speed. It was challenging to haul the sail and hold my position because the yacht leaned heavily toward the water. It was an interesting experience”.The INRTU Siberian School of Geosciences thanks its consortium partner for providing judging and overall organization of the competition.
The next competition is planned for October 4. It will coincide with the closing of the institute’s field season.
