INRTU Delegation Congratulated Sh. Otgonbileg Erdenet Institute of Technology in Mongolia on its 50th Anniversary

In early October, celebrations were held in Erdenet, Mongolia, to mark the 50th anniversary of the Erdenet Institute of Technology named after Otgonbileg Shagdaryn. An INRTU delegation took part in the anniversary events.

The university delegation included Vice-Rector for Research Aleksandr Kononov, Head of the Department of Mine Surveying and Geodesy Professor Aleksandr Zagibalov, and Head of the Department of Road Transport Aleksandr Fedotov.

The program featured an official ceremony with a concert and congratulatory speeches, as well as a festive parade involving students, faculty, and guests. A representative of the State Great Hural announced the decision to grant the institute university status.

INRTU Vice-Rector for Research Aleksandr Kononov congratulated the Rector of the Sh. Otgonbileg Erdenet Institute of Technology and presented memorable gifts fr om INRTU.

The INRTU delegates toured the mine of the Erdenet mining and processing plant and visited the motor transport enterprise, wh ere they inspected the fleet of heavy-duty BELAZ and Komatsu dump trucks.

In Ulaanbaatar, the INRTU delegation paid a visit to the Mongolian University of Science and Technology (MUST).

Vice-Rector for Research Aleksandr Kononov shared his impressions of the trip:

“The city of Erdenet and the mining enterprise are very dear to our university, as many INRTU graduates work there in leadership positions. Our professors Aleksandr Zagibalov and Aleksandr Fedotov have been collaborating with Mongolian colleagues on personnel training for many years.

The most vivid impression that struck me was the attitude of our young graduates towards the professors who came from Irkutsk. They welcomed Aleksandr Zagibalov and Aleksandr Fedotov with joy, sought communication with them, and were immensely grateful for the experience gained in INRTU's scientific schools”.

It should be noted that graduates of INRTU make a significant contribution to the development of the Republic of Mongolia, with some achieving high career growth. These include graduates of the INRTU Department of Mine Surveying and Geodesy: Erdenet Mining Corporation General Director Yondon Geleng, former Minister of Mining and Heavy Industry of Mongolia Badamsuren Khookhorin, a Hero of Labor of Mongolia awarded the highest state honor for outstanding achievements in the country's development.

Head of the Department of Mine Surveying and Geodesy Professor Aleksandr Zagibalov emphasized the continuity of INRTU graduates in leadership positions at Mongolian enterprises:

“The Erdenet Mining Corporation SOE has been managed by three INRTU graduates – Shagdaryn Otgonbileg, Khookhoryn Badamsuren, and the current General Director Yondon Gelen. Two of them – Shagdaryn Otgonbileg and Khookhoryn Badamsuren – were awarded the title of Hero of Labor of Mongolia. The graduates studied in the same specialty ‘mining engineer-surveyor’ at the INRTU Department of Mine Surveying and Geodesy. This is undoubtedly a credit to the department for training outstanding managers and professionals for Mongolia's mining industry”.

Niambat Badzharghal studied at the INRTU Department of Road Transport (postgraduate studies). In 2024, under the supervision of Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation, Professor Aleksandr Fedotov, Niambat Badzharghal successfully prepared and defended his candidate dissertation devoted to developing a power method for diagnosing vehicle shock absorbers in road conditions. The scientific novelty of the work was the creation of a mathematical model of the ‘Vehicle – Suspension – Tire – Road’ system, and the equipment he developed significantly improved the quality of suspension technical condition monitoring, reduced labor and time costs for troubleshooting, and enhanced vehicle stability and safety. This method has been implemented in the technological process of Mongolian motor transport enterprises. Currently, Badzharghal Niambat heads the Department of Automotive Transport at the Sh. Otgonbileg Erdenet Institute of Technology.

Professor Aleksandr Fedotov spoke warmly of his student:

“Niambat Badzharghal was a very hardworking postgraduate student, showing persistence and curiosity. All these qualities are extremely important for a young scientist and research analyst. During the pandemic, amid restrictions, he brilliantly handled the practical implementation of the tasks set in the dissertation research and successfully defended his candidate thesis. I am very happy for my student and personally congratulated him on his career advancement. The young specialist is not only engaged in science and teaching students but now also heads the Department of Automotive Transport”.

Long-term ties have been established between the automotive transport departments of the two universities. According to Aleksandr Fedotov, plans include continuing cooperation with Mongolian colleagues and preparing postgraduate students for Mongolian universities and enterprises. Mongolian students study using Aleksandr Fedotov's textbooks.

It should be noted that during the visit to the Mongolian University of Science and Technology (MUST), Professor Aleksandr Fedotov was awarded a medal for training several generations of automotive engineers and scientists on the day of the centenary of Mongolia's automotive industry.

During the visit, the parties outlined prospects for cooperation in the field of digitalization between the partner universities and enterprises of the Mongolian mining industry.
