Political Economics
This course develops students' understanding of the economic theory of public choice and its application to the analysis of political processes and government policy. It covers the main concepts of public choice theory, the problem of political participation, the legislative process, interest groups and lobbying, rent-seeking, behavioral models of bureaucracy, mechanisms of power limitation, authoritarian governance, selectorate theory, corruption, and the logic of revolutions. The course includes discussions, business games, case studies, and article reviews.

Topics covered
- The course covers the theory of public choice: introduction (object and subject, main research directions), the problem of political participation (voting paradox, median voter theorem, rational ignorance), the legislative process (logrolling, pork-barrel politics), interest groups and lobbying, rent-seeking, behavioral models of bureaucracy, mechanisms of power limitation (separation of powers, federalism), authoritarian governance (models of dictatorship), selectorate theory, corruption, and the logic of revolutions. The course includes discussions, business games, case studies, and article reviews. Assessment includes oral surveys, tests, article reviews, and a pass.
