International English Day at INRTU: Dictation, Competition, Translation Tasks and Creative Training

International English Language Day was celebrated at INRTU. The program of the celebration included a completion, dictation, translation contest and creative training within the framework of the Lingua Franca club meeting.

The events are organized by the School of Linguistics and Intercultural Communication of INRTU, which is headed by Olga Kolmakova.

"English Language Day is celebrated on April 23. The date was chosen in honor of the memory day of the poet and playwright William Shakespeare. Our School annually joins the celebration by organizing educational and creative projects.

This time we were joined not only by INRTU students and professors, but also by representatives of Irkutsk State University and Baikal State University. It is gratifying that our fellow students demonstrated a high level of English language during the events," says Olga Kolmakova.

Almost 50 people from the Mechanical Engineering College, Irkutsk State University and Baikal State University were interested in the English language dictation, which took place on April 24. From INRTU, the project was supported by students and professors of the Baikal School of BRICS headed by Director Anna Kireenko, as well as INRTU students learning engineering English.

The event was supervised by Natalia Shalamay, Senior Teacher of the Department of Foreign Languages №1. Certified teacher of Cambridge University Karin Judkins traditionally became the speaker and read a text about family traditions.

Konstantin Akreev, a second-year student of the Department of Advertising and Journalism of INRTU, took part in the dictation.

"At first it was difficult to perceive the text in a foreign language, but eventually I managed to focus. The event improved my language skills and motivated me to further study English," Konstantin shared.

The final stage of the Competition, organized by Associate Professors of the Department of Foreign Languages №1 Alexandra Kereshun and Yulia Belyaeva, was also held on the same day.

"In the first round, students solved vocabulary, grammar, reading and listening tasks. When preparing the final stage, we relied on the experience of TOEFL and IELTS. They offer examinees to watch a movie and share their impressions in English," Alexandra Kereshun specified.

Six teams from INRTU, Irkutsk State University and Baikal State University joined the Translation Tasks competition. The creative tournament included three stages: translation of English texts into Russian, translation of a poem with observance of style and rhyme, translation of a video clip from Russian into English and its presentation in the form of a theatrical performance.

Such events pump up students' language skills and develop their creative thinking, as Tatiana Kushnareva, the organizer of the competition, noticed.

The leaders of Translation Tasks were INRTU students studying in the program Translator in the field of professional communication. The second and third places were taken by students of Baikal State University.

The celebration of the International English Language Day in INRTU was continued by creative training Startup ideas generator within the framework of the Lingua Franca club meeting. The event took place in the Tochka Kipeniya (Boiling Point) on April 26.
