UI GreenMetric World University Rankings is the world's first university ranking that measures the commitment of each participant to policies related to green campus and sustainable development in universities around the world. The rankings reflect an assessment of an educational institution's efforts to implement green and sustainable policies and programs.

Universities are evaluated on six indicators: environment and infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste, water, transportation, education, and research.

To participate in the rating, universities have to present not only quantitative data about their university, but also to confirm this information with references to regulatory documents, scans of orders, news from the media, photos, etc.

Irkutsk Polytechnic has been participating in the UI Green Metrics rating since 2017. During this time, the university has risen from 558th place to 204th place among 52 participating universities from Russia, which shows the high evaluation of the university's work in the field of sustainable development and environmental management at the global level. In addition, it encourages the INRTU to promote a responsible attitude of students and staff to the environment, energy and water conservation, as well as to actively introduce "green" technologies on the campus.

It should be noted that the university's performance in international rankings is an important criterion that foreign applicants are guided by when choosing a university. And professors, industry experts and government organizations use the data on the position of a particular university in the international rankings to make decisions about cooperation.
