The Scientists of INRTU and the Academy of Sciences of Mongolia discussed the reconstruction of the paleoclimate

The Mongolian delegation was represented by Director of the School of Astronomy and Geophysics of Academy of Sciences Demberel Sodnomsambuu and Director of the School of Geography and Geology of Mongolian People’s Republic Dashceren Avirmed.

Vice-Rector for Research of the INRTU Alexander Kononov presented a report on Russian-Mongolian expedition «Khuvsgul -2022» which took place on August 15-22 in the south of lake Khubsugul. During this time, scientists overcame 3200 km, studied the karst systems of the area, explored four caves and took samples for laboratory researches.

The research team included the employees of the School of Geography and Geology of Mongolia, the Institute of the Earth's Crust of the SB RAS, the INRTU and the Khubsgul national park. In the southern part of the lake speleologists from Mongolia and Irkutsk Alexander Osintsev, Dmitry Sokolnikov and Sangdorzh Avirmed worked with Alexander Kononov.

Describing the caves, Alexander Kononov emphasized that these territories should be under state protection:

«With the direction of the Khubsgul National Park we discussed the issue of protecting caves and giving them the status of natural monuments, basing on Russia's experience in this area».

In order to expand and specify the practical material, it is planned to introduce stationary observation points into operation. It will improve the accuracy of the results and predicted climate changes. This method of obtaining information is used by the School of Geography and Geoecology of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences.

Director of the Institute Dashtseren Avirmed noted that the activities of the institution cover all areas of environmental protection. Mr. Dashtseren and his colleagues will be happy to conduct joint scientific research with the INRTU. The list of events will include a series of large-scale expeditions.

The initiative was supported by the director of the School of Astronomy and Geophysics Demberel Sodnomsambuu. According to him, active deformations of the earth's crust have aroused interest in the scientific community - two expeditions of exploring the southern part of the Baikal rift zone have been completed. Mr. Demberel is confident that cooperation with the INRTU will allow systematizing the results of field work and developing new projects in various areas, including geology and seismology.

Rector of the INRTU Mikhail Kornyakov added that the university trains professional personnel for Mongolian industry and cooperates with universities of Mongolia in research terms.
