Students of INRTU received gold medals at the Championship of the Irkutsk region in ski orienteering
INRTU students won two gold medals at the Irkutsk Regional Championship in ski orienteering. Daria Melnichuk, a freshman, won in the cross-country skiing on the marked track. Pavel Barkalov, Kirill Ochirov and Daria Melnichuk finished first in the mixed relay.
The competitions were held on January 27-29 in the area of Lake Yunnatka and at the "Dynamo" ski base. During three days almost 300 sportsmen of the region demonstrated their skills in different disciplines.
Daria Melnichuk, a first-year student of the School of Economics, Management and Law, won a gold medal on the first day of the competition. She demonstrated excellent speed, chose the right tactics and overtook two rivals - masters of sports of the Russian Federation. With this victory Daria Melnichuk secured a place at the Championship of Russia, which will be held in St. Petersburg on February, 10-12.
Daria trains under the guidance of Andrei Vainer-Krotov at the university. This year she took first place at the regional championship in cross-country skiing.
Daria performed together with Kirill Ochirov and Pavel Barkalov on the third day of the competition. The coordinated actions of the sportsmen allowed them to win the second gold medal.
According to Vladimir Gorbunov, coach of the INRTU orienteering team, thanks to their excellent results Kirill and Pavel confirmed their titles of candidates for master of sports:
"I was pleased with the athletes' results in this competition, even though we mostly focus on cross-country skiing in our section."
Athletes are preparing for the national competition in sports orientation. The tournament will take place in the Angarsk district at the end of April.
