A Team from Mongolia Became the Winners of the International Basketball Championship at INRTU
The international basketball championship was organized in the sport hall of INRTU on November 5-7. The participants were students from INRTU, Mongolian State University of Science and Technology, Irkutsk State University, IrGUPS, Irkutsk branch of the Russian University of Sport (RUS) and Buryat State University. The Mongolian team SHUTIS-SHARKS was the leader, while the INRTU team won the silver medal. The bronze medalists were students of the Irkutsk branch of RUS.
At the opening ceremony, Sergey Anosov, Vice-Rector for Campus and Corporate Management, said that the sporting event was realized within the framework of the “Basketball for Students” project:
“Every year our university holds a competition to choose a priority sport. In 2024, the basketball team received a development grant.
Today I am happy to welcome athletes from Irkutsk, Ulan-Ude and Ulaanbaatar. Our championship proves that sport can unite not only regions, but also nations. I wish the volleyball players to have great games and the audience to enjoy watching”.
Dorjsuren Zhargalsaikhan, First Vice-President of the Asian University Sports Federation, Secretary General of the Mongolian Student Sports Union, and Sergey Yakovlev, President of the Irkutsk Regional Basketball Federation, also addressed the participants.
The event was complemented by the performance of the INRTU cheerleading team and a colorful performance “Shaman” by dancers of the folk club of modern choreography “Shagi”.
The international championship was supervised by the director of the sports training center Alexandr Demidov. For three days nine spectacular meetings took place in the sport hall. The championship was opened by the match between the team of INRTU and students from the Irkutsk branch of RUS, in which the INRTU won. Then the teams of SHUTIS-SHARKS and IrGUPS met on the field. Mongolian athletes confidently beat Irkutsk students with the score 37:19.
The second day was also successful for the team from Mongolia, when they defeated Irkutsk State University with a colossal score of 112:36. Serious resistance awaited the championship leaders in the final match with the INRTU team. However, the experience and teamwork of the Mongolian players allowed them to beat the INRTU with the score 60:48.
According to Alexandr Chelembeev, coach of the INRTU basketball players, the team consisted of five senior students and the same number of first-years.
“Our students played four matches, losing only to strong athletes from SHUTIS-SHARKS. We were eager to meet with the Mongolian team, from whom there is much to learn, in the final. I am satisfied with the results of my team – each of the guys showed themselves worthily.
These large-scale competitions attracted a large number of people. In addition, VK Video was broadcasting live,” comments the coach.
Currently, the INRTU basketball team is participating in the Irkutsk Region Championship. In spring, the INRTU players will compete at the Spartakiad among the universities of the Angara Region.
