Translation Theory and Practice

The course will provide a deeper insight into the nature and fundamental principles of translation theory and practice when developing professional translation skills. The course is directly related to other courses of the programme, such as Research Paradigms in Linguistics and Translation, Text Studies, Technical Translation Workshop, Linguistic Research Methods, Commercial Translation Workshop where sophisticated research and translation skills are required. Also, it contributes to the final stage of the programme that is Thesis Writing and Defense.

The goal of mastering the discipline

To facilitate high quality translation through raising awareness of text translatological types and general translation strategy, as well as translation principles, translation editing and proofreading of domain-specific texts

  • Text linguistics and translation. Linguistic text analysis and translation analysis. Functional stylistics and translation theory. Cultural aspect of translation analysis. Genre studies and text genres. Functional styles. Journalese functional style. Translation types.
